I lived in Florida for 10 years so I can tell you that building condos on the waterfront for rich people does not create vibrant communities but that is exactly what SF is being told by the supporters of the 8 Washington Project.

This development project is wrong for our city and that is why I testified against it before the Finance Committee of the Board of Supervisors on Wednesday.

I sat and watched the presentation of the developers and the more I watched the more I realized that the project does not fit San Francisco. For those of you needing a background read this.

In this deal SF is selling our waterfront out to the highest bidder. In this case it is a developer who plans to build condos which will cost $2-7 million each. In a time when people can't afford to buy houses or even rent an apartment in this City this development project strikes a bad chord. Are we turning our City into a place where only the 1% can afford to live?

The arguments in favor of the project are that it will bring in needed tax revenue to the City. Really? Well why don't we start building giant casinos at our waterfront and high rise condos for the elite. Because we are San Francisco - that's why. We are not Miami Beach.

Yes we can always use tax revenue but not by selling out our core values. 8 Washington will not create a vibrant community by the waterfront. It will create expensive condos that rich people will come to three times a year to watch the Blue Angels, the Americas Cup, and the World Series (when the Giants make it again God willing).

We can do better as a City. I'm surprised at some of the Supervisors who are in favor of this project including my opponent Christina Olague. I believe she supports the project because labor is behind it but that is exactly why we need a Supervisor who is independent and not beholden to labor or development. Yes we need development, but it needs to be congruent with the values of this City.

As Supervisor I will not support development that is not consistent with our values as a City. To sign the petition to stop the project click below.
